About Thames Environment and this portal
We are an environmental compliance consultancy. We publish these guidelines free because the first thing most businesses need is a clear answer to “does this apply to me, and by when?”, and that answer is scattered across dozens of government pages.
What the portal is for
The portal is a plain-English reference to the environmental laws that apply to businesses in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each guide follows the same shape so you can find what you need quickly: who must comply, the thresholds, the next date, the regulator, the maximum penalty and where to act, then the detail, the national differences, fees, a checklist, the official online services and the legislation itself.
Around the guides sit the tools that make it a portal rather than a library: a deadlines calendar, a fees and charges table, a directory of official services, a list of regulators and legislation, a glossary, a dated log of regulatory updates and an interactive compliance checker.
How we keep it accurate
- Every guide is checked against primary sources: GOV.UK, legislation.gov.uk, the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA, NIEA and DAERA, HMRC, Defra, DESNZ and the scheme administrators. The sources are listed at the foot of each guide.
- Every guide shows the date it was last reviewed. We re-review when the law changes and on a rolling schedule.
- We separate law from proposals. Anything announced or consulted on but not yet in force is marked “proposed”, in the calendar and in the text.
- Where a figure cannot be verified against a primary source, we leave it out rather than guess.
- The guidelines are general information, not legal advice. Your obligations depend on your circumstances.
